# Track Website Visitors and Identify Buying Intent Signals

> Resolve the companies and people behind your website sessions, score their buying intent, and push warm accounts directly to an AI Agent for outreach.

Visitor Tracking turns anonymous website traffic into named companies and people. Install one lightweight tracking script, and Salestools starts resolving the businesses behind your sessions, identifying decision makers, scoring buying intent, and surfacing accounts that match your ICP — so you can reach out while interest is still fresh.

## KPI strip

The strip across the top of the page summarizes your last 30 days of tracking data.

| KPI                     | What it means                                                        |
| ----------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Identified visitors** | People you have been able to resolve to a name. |
| **Anonymous sessions** | Visitors not yet identified, shown out of total traffic. |
| **Companies** | Distinct companies resolved, with a validated count where available. |
| **Live now** | Visitors active on your site in the last 30 minutes. |
| **Engaged companies**   | Multi-page, ICP-matched accounts showing strong intent.              |
| **Identification rate** | Identified visitors divided by total visitors. |

<Note>
  Visitor Tracking works best for B2B traffic. Consumer, ISP, or residential traffic, and visitors using privacy-hardened browsers, may stay anonymous — not every session can be resolved to a name or company.
</Note>

## Install the tracking script

You need to place a small script on your website before any data appears. The setup wizard walks you through each step.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the setup wizard">
    On the Visitor Tracking page, click **Set up tracking** in the top-right corner (or **Install tracking script** if you have already created an API key). If the page is showing the setup gate, click **Set up tracking** there instead.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create an API key">
    In the wizard, click **Get started**, give the key a descriptive name (for example, *"Website Tracking"*), and enter your production website domain including `https://`. Click **Create API key** to generate your key.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the script to your site">
    The wizard generates a single `<script>` tag. Copy the snippet and paste it just before the closing `</head>` tag on every page you want to track.

    ```html theme={null}
    <script
      src="https://cdn.salestools.io/tracker.js"
      data-api-key="YOUR_API_KEY"
    ></script>
    ```

    The script is async, under 4 KB, and has no external dependencies — it will not slow your site down.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Verify the installation">
    Deploy your site, then click **Verify installation** in the wizard. Salestools checks for your first pageview and confirms when data is flowing. If verification returns *"No data yet"*, confirm the snippet is present in the `<head>` of every page, then click **Check again**. You can also click **Skip for now** and re-verify later from the Install tracking script drawer.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### Choose your install method

The **Install tracking script** drawer offers three installation methods depending on your stack.

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Manual">
    Copy the `<script>` snippet from the wizard and paste it directly into the `<head>` of your HTML. This method works for any site regardless of platform or framework.

    <Tip>
      Toggle **Show debug script** in the manual panel to load a verbose version of the tracker that logs events to the browser console — useful for diagnosing installation issues before going live.
    </Tip>
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Google Tag Manager">
    Connect Salestools to your Google Tag Manager container with one click. GTM pushes the tracking tag to every page managed by your container automatically, so no code changes are needed.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Cloudflare">
    Install the tracker as a Cloudflare Worker using a token. This method runs the script at the edge and is a good fit for Cloudflare-proxied sites that want to avoid client-side scripts entirely.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

### Connect an existing setup

If the tracking script is already live on your site from a previous workspace or external install, you don't need to reinstall it.

On the setup screen, find **Already have the script live elsewhere?** and click **Connect with \[your email]**. Salestools links this workspace to the visitors already mapped to your account. If the status still shows **Not connected**, click **Re-check setup** to refresh the connection and pull in your existing data.

## Explore your visitors

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose a tab">
    Below the KPI strip, select the **Companies** tab to browse resolved accounts or the **People** tab to browse individual visitors. Each tab has its own table, search bar, filters, and sort controls.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Filter and search">
    Apply the **Industry**, **Location**, **Domain**, and **Intent** (High / Medium / Low / Negative) filters, or type in the search box to find a specific account or person. On the People tab, flip the **Identified only** toggle to hide anonymous sessions and see only named visitors.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sort the table">
    Click any column header to sort by that field; click again to reverse the direction. Both tables default to most-recently-seen first.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save a filter view">
    With your filters active, open the saved-filters control and save the current combination under a name. Reapply it any time with a single click, or delete it when it's no longer needed.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open a visitor profile">
    Click any row to open its detail drawer. For people, the drawer has three tabs:

    * **Overview** — contact information, intent level, fit grade, intent score, and a 30-day trend chart.
    * **Activity** — a full page-by-page session timeline with timestamps, plus traffic source data (UTMs and referrer).
    * **Company** — the resolved account's details, similar leads, and a link to open the full company record.

    From the drawer you can click **Email** to start a message or **Open company** to jump directly to the account record.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Send visitors to an AI Agent

Turn warm website traffic into active outreach without leaving the page.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Select rows">
    Tick the checkboxes next to the companies or people you want to enroll. Use the header checkbox to select everything in the current filtered view.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Add to AI Agent">
    In the selection bar that appears at the bottom, click **Add to AI Agent**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick agents and confirm">
    In the picker, choose one or more active AI Agents, then confirm. The selected accounts are queued into each agent for automated outreach.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  When you select **people**, Salestools resolves them to their companies and adds those companies to the agent — the selection bar shows you exactly how many companies will be added before you confirm. People without a resolved company are skipped and will not be enrolled.
</Note>

## Frequently asked questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="The status says 'Not connected' or 'Not installed'">
    You haven't installed the tracking script or generated an API key yet. Click **Set up tracking** to run the setup wizard. If you've already installed the script elsewhere, click **Re-check setup** to refresh the connection. The header status turns green (*"Tracking live"*) once a key exists and the connection is active.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I'm connected but tracking isn't live">
    You're linked to the visitor service but have no API key in this workspace. Generate one through **Set up tracking**, install the script snippet, then deploy your site — visitors only start resolving after the script is live.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="No visitors are showing up">
    After installing the script, give it a few minutes to receive its first pageview. Confirm the snippet is in the `<head>` of every page and that you've deployed to your production environment. Remember that not every visitor can be identified — consumer traffic and privacy-hardened browsers often stay anonymous, and the People tab defaults to named visitors only.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A person in the list has no company">
    Some visitors resolve to a named person but not to an account, or vice versa. When adding people to an AI Agent, only those with a resolved company are queued — the selection bar displays the count of eligible entries before you confirm.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My data appears incomplete or capped">
    The page loads a large batch of your visitors and filters them locally for instant search and sorting. Very high-volume sites may not display the entire history at once. Use the Industry, Intent, or Domain filters to narrow your view to the accounts that matter most.
